Good news for every cycling fan in the Netherlands: the European Track Cycling Championships will return to Apeldoorn in 2028. Omnisport, which just two years ago hosted a sold-out championship, has once again been selected as the host venue for the European track cycling title competition. This brings a top international sporting event to the Netherlands, and it will be one of the sporting highlights of the Dutch Cycling Festival—the anniversary year in which the KNWU celebrates its 100th anniversary.

The European Championships are organized by the KNWU, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, the Province of Gelderland, the Municipality of Apeldoorn, and LPC, in collaboration with the European Cycling Union (UEC).

The whole of the Netherlands is celebrating cycling

The European Championships will be one of the highlights of the Dutch Cycling Festival 2028, a year-long celebration of elite sports and cycling activities throughout the country. Schools, clubs, and community partners will be involved in the championships, with the goal of making the energy of elite sports felt beyond the walls of Omnisport.

Interim Executive Director Andreas Roodbeen (KNWU): “We are proud that, together with our partners, we are bringing the European Track Cycling Championships back to Apeldoorn in 2028. In the year the KNWU celebrates its 100th anniversary, we will welcome Europe’s top riders to our country, and the European Championships will serve as an important benchmark for our riders as they prepare for the Olympic Games.”

Harrie Lavreysen is also looking forward to 2028: “The atmosphere at Omnisport during the 2024 European Championships was impressive and provided a tremendous boost of energy. Racing in front of a home crowd is the best feeling there is. That’s why, together with the KNWU and LPC, I was happy to work toward bringing the championships back to Apeldoorn.”

Lavreysen knows better than anyone what a sold-out Omnisport means to a cyclist. Last year, he was crowned Cyclist of the Year 2025 at the Beatrix Theater. This year, that title—along with the other cycling awards—will be presented during *De Laatste Etappe*, the live cycling talk show on Monday evening, November 2. Tickets are available.
