Last year, a group of six cyclists rode right through the Alps, past glaciers that are disappearing at an alarming rate. A documentary filmmaker filmed them along the way: the sweat, the doubt, the euphoria on the mountain passes, and their confrontation with the melting ice. A year later, there’s just one more step needed to tell that story in full—and we need your help to make it happen.
A peloton through the Alps
Nathalie, Bob, Jaap, Jos, Pepijn, and Joost tackled over 1,600 kilometers and 33,000 meters of elevation gain, with some days featuring 3,500 meters of elevation gain in a single stretch. They did this not only to witness the remaining beauty of the Alpine glaciers, but also to raise awareness about the possibilities of CO2 removal. The Glorious Glacier Ride is more than just a bike ride: it’s a cycling tribute to glaciers that have lost nearly 40% of their volume over the past 25 years.
The story is almost complete
Most of that story has already been captured on film. But a documentary isn’t truly finished until it also shows what happens after the finish line. Did that ride change anything? That’s why the filmmakers will revisit the participants a year after the ride for interviews: have they started to view climate change, their own impact, and their choices differently? That’s what makes the Glorious Glacier Documentary not just a race report, but a story with heart—a snapshot of how we can approach the future.
What's still needed
We are raising 6,500 euros to complete this final segment. 1,500 euros will go toward the interviews conducted one year after the trip, 3,000 euros for the full editing of the documentary, 500 euros for submissions to film festivals, 1,000 euros for a unique preview screening, and 500 euros to cover the costs of this crowdfunding campaign itself. With enough support, a mid-October release is within reach, and your name will appear in the credits. If more than the target amount is raised, the excess will be donated to the Cycling 4 Climate foundation.
Why this is important
The glaciers in the Alps are melting away right before our eyes. This story isn’t just about what we’re losing—it’s about the people who took action to do something about it. Every contribution helps tell that story in its entirety, so it can inspire many more people to take action themselves. Every donor, big or small, will be credited in the documentary’s closing credits.
About Cycling 4 Climate
Cycling 4 Climate makes sustainability fun through cycling events, raises awareness about the climate crisis, and shows how you can make a difference. The organization is also known for its annual Climate Classic, which draws attention to climate change and inspires people to take action. Cycling 4 Climate has ANBI status and is run entirely by volunteers. With bike rides now taking place in ten regions, the organization is well on its way to achieving its goal of becoming Europe’s largest sustainable cycling community.
The Glorious Glacier Ride was Cycling 4 Climate’s first multi-day event in 2005. What began as an individual cycling trip turned into an international peloton that raised over 23,000 euros for carbon removal.
